new Yelp review

Fantabulous!!! (is that a word...ha) 'Tis now..I just made it up especially for this wonderful dealership...no pressure just pleasant salesmanship and service...no phony bs and fluff...just the facts and keeping it simple...let the Toyota speak for itself.
Sammy, my salesman, Todd and Juda in finance were great and I didn't feel like a solo flaky female buyer or the crazy ol lady i probably am..ha...
I do know I am resting easier that I got a worry-free reliable Toyota Corolla with a lifetime warranty and great maintainance package that a single old lady like me needs..peace of mind, plus better gas mileage.

Also, thanks to Gina in internet sales for her fast and furious response this morning to my online inquiry, and knowing her online inventory....and motivating me to get down to the dealership. Enthusiasm is contagious and I caught it from her. Sorry, Stokes Kia..she beat you out of this customer as I thought I would give them a chance first since I bought a vehicle from them before, but they didn't seem eager...in sales, connection and timing is everything.

And I can't believe the advertised price online for a vehicle was the ACTUAL price and not some bait to bite.. only to find out later that the actual price is much higher once you get in the door as I have found in other dealerships.

It's hard to settle for practical in a car when you're on a limited budget, but it helps when you walk in knowing you're poor, but don't feel like a poor person walking out. and the big boss made a point to come over more than once to thank me for buying
Thanks Hendrick Toyota for a non-stressful car buying experience!!
When I win the lottery I'll be back to trade up to an Avalon...unless you expand to get into the Lexus biz, too.

Thank you very much for your very kind review

"I bought my 2012 Highlander Base last year. Really enjoyed driving it. My wife love the snow button, which gives you better handle on snowy road. The three row sitter is great future to have. Most of the time we have the third row folded down so we have much bigger cargo space. No complains at all after having it for a year and 11K miles."

Review

I traded in my 2010 Toyota Venza for this Highlander because I wanted something more refined and comfortable. And I was right with choosing the Highlander. The ride is so quiet that when I had the radio off once, I only heard the A/C when I was going 40 mph. The ride is so smooth, reminds me of a 2011 Toyota Camry I drove. This car is so much more refined than my Venza. So Quiet. Its also easier to get out of, especially for my grandmother. I also feel safer in this. I've only had it for three weeks, So I will do another review after I drive through the snow with it. The car handles well, its not thrilling or bad. The steering is better than My Venzas. This is my 5th Toyota.

greencarreports.com 2013 Avalon

excerpt 1

2013 Toyota Avalon Hybrid : Gas Mileage Drive Report

On a 292-mile test drive over a long weekend, using our usual drive route of about two-thirds highway mileage and one third around-town travel, Toyota's largest sedan gave us a combined gas mileage of 40.2 mpg.
Which we'd say is pretty darn good for a full-size sedan that weighs 3,600 pounds.

excerpt 2

2013 Toyota Avalon Hybrid : Gas Mileage Drive Report

Both the Avalon and the Camry use Toyota's 2.5-liter four-cylinder Atkinson Cycle engine, paired with the Hybrid Synergy Drive system, which contains two electric motor-generators.
The system can power the car on electricity alone, under light loads, and use the electric motors to provide supplemental torque that assists the engine.

The motors turn into generators to recharge the nickel-metal-hydride battery pack using engine overrun and regenerative braking, and they switch on the engine when needed.
Unlike the standard Prius lift back model, the hybrid system in the Avalon has been tuned to permit all-electric running as high as 48 mph.

excerpt 3

2013 Toyota Avalon Hybrid : Gas Mileage Drive Report

We found it easy to keep the car in "EV" mode for a mile or more if the road was flat or a slight downgrade, and traffic permitted us to maintain a steady speed.
Speed matters, of course: We noticed that we could easily average 42 mpg around town, but mileage dipped below 40 mpg on the highway.

Overall, the Avalon Hybrid neatly nailed its EPA combined rating on our test drive--unlike some hybrids from other makers.
And it goes to reinforce our impression that Toyota's hybrid system returns real-world efficiency that's pretty close to the EPA ratings that are the only fuel efficiency metric any maker is allowed to publicize.

US NEWS ranking and reviews: Toyota Prius

excerpts from US NEWS

The Prius isn’t thrilling to drive, but reviewers say its spacious trunk, high fuel economy ratings and roomy interior will appeal to shoppers who want to save gas and need a versatile hatchback.

The 2013 Toyota Prius has a four-cylinder engine and electric motor that combine to make 134 horsepower. This powertrain is mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Prius’ fuel economy estimates of 51/48 mpg city/highway are outstanding for the class. Since the Prius’ mission is to conserve fuel, reviewers don’t expect it to be engaging behind the wheel. They say it has numb steering, a floaty suspension, spongy brakes and hesitates from a stop, but they do think the Prius delivers a comfortable ride. The Prius also has one of the highest reliability ratings in its class.

The Toyota Prius is the 2013 Best Hatchback for Families because it has the best combination of quality, size and family-friendly features in its class.

Inside, auto critics are impressed with the amount of cargo space and back-seat passenger room. Most reviewers think the Prius’ seats are comfortable. The 2013 Toyota Prius wins some test drivers over with materials they consider upscale, while others think some of the plastics aren’t up to class standards. Standard features include Bluetooth, USB and auxiliary audio inputs, push-button start, Smart Key and seven airbags. SEE INVENTORY

2013 Toyota Avalon Wins Best Green Car

Article and photo provided by Hybridcars.com
editor: Philippe Crowe

The Toyota Avalon Hybrid was named the “Best Green Car” at the 2013 Atlanta International Auto Show by the Greater Atlanta Automotive Media Association (GAAMA).

The group of automotive journalists has been awarding “best of show” vehicles for four years running, said Davis Adams, president of GAAMA. “The Avalon is an impressive option in the green car category, with size, luxury and fuel efficiency that make it a standout in a segment otherwise crowded with smaller economy cars,” Adams said.

The Avalon’s Hybrid Synergy Drive shares with the Camry Hybrid a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that employs the Atkinson cycle to postpone closure of the intake valves and delay the compression cycle, helping reduce intake and exhaust energy losses to improve fuel efficiency.

The GAAMA said reduced weight, clean aerodynamics and an efficient Hybrid drivetrain combine to give this sedan a combined 40 mpg EPA-rating (40 city/39 hwy). Taking the Avalon’s 17-gallon fuel tank into consideration, the Avalon Hybrid can offer a range of more than 600 miles per tank. READ FULL ARTICLE

The 2013 Toyota Avalon ranks 4 out of 9 Affordable Large Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of published reviews and test drives of the Toyota Avalon, as well as reliability and safety data.

Reviewers say that updated styling and a spacious, comfortable interior make the redesigned 2013 Toyota Avalon one of the most upscale cars in the class.

2013 Toyota Avalon Sedan XLE

The 2013 Toyota Avalon comes with a V6 engine that most test drivers say provides ample power. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard, and reviewers write that it’s refined with exceptionally smooth gear changes. Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 21/31 mpg city/highway, which is slightly better than most affordable large cars. Like the 2012 model, the redesigned Avalon offers a comfort-tuned ride that test drivers appreciate. However, most automotive reviewers also say that the new Avalon handles much better than the old car, which was often regarded as ponderous and floaty. FULL STORY

2014 Toyota 4Runner: Aggressive Exterior Complements Rugged Reliability Of Mid-Size SUV

Read what the International Business Times has to say about the 2014 4Runner

Toyota Motor Corp. has taken some of the best aspects of a Sport Utility Vehicle and grafted them onto a vehicle that can perform as a capable off-road vehicle. At a media press preview of the 2014 Toyota 4Runner, the midsize SUV handled an off-road course with comfort and style.

2014 Toyota 4RunnerThe 2014 Toyota 4Runner has been redesigned but maintains its off-road capability. IBTimes/Charles Poladian

The 2014 Toyota 4Runner may not be as appreciated as the Tundra, but it has been redesigned to echo the full-size pickup truck’s power and capability. The 2014 4Runner has an overhauled exterior with Toyota leaning towards an "aggressive" look that has become popular in recent redesigns.

Much like the Tundra, the 2014 Toyota 4Runner comes in three grades, the SR5, Limited and Trail. Each grade comes standard with 4.0-liter, 270-horsepower V-6 engine and a five-speed automatic transmission, and owners can choose two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive or part-time four wheel drive.
The 2014 Toyota 4Runner SR5 and Limited feature new front grilles, and for those who want more off-road capability there's the Trail edition with a hood scoop. The 2014 Toyota 4Runner Limited will include chrome trim along the exterior, a chrome front grille and front bumper.

Toyota has focused on improving the handling and performance of the 4Runner, similar to the design choices of the 2014 Toyota Tundra, which, coupled with the new interior, create an easy driving experience. Off-road, the 4Runner has several options, such as the Crawl Control that is standard on the Trail edition, that controls the braking and engine output of the vehicle, so the driver can focus on steering.

The 2014 Toyota 4Runner's off-road capability is aided by the body-on-frame construction. As noted by Autoblog, many car manufacturers are switching to unibody designs, but the body-on-frame construction of the 4Runnner increases the flexibility of the vehicle, reducing potential damage to the suspension. The mid-size SUV market is a competitive one and the 4Runner is one of the weaker-performing Toyotas available. According to Autoblog, Toyota sold more than 120,00 Highlanders in 2012 while selling just 78,457 body-on-frame SUVs, such as the 4Runner, FJ Cruiser and Sequioa. The redesign could help bolster sales but it may not be enough if consumers considering the number of available options.

Without any drastic upgrades, the 2014 Toyota 4Runner is the mid-size SUV many owners have come to expect from Toyota. The new design features help the 4Runner stand out from other mid-size SUVs and is well-suited for anything an owner will throw at it. As the last body-on-frame SUV on the market, the 2014 Toyota 4Runner is the torchbearer for traditional car manufacturing, but it's not stuck in the past and could be a good option for owners that do a bit of traveling.

New exterior makes big impact for 2014 Corolla

Excerpt from The Eagle-Tribune in New Hampshire

Base model estimated mpg: TBD

Estimated starting price: $16,800

The all-new 2014 Toyota Corolla includes dramatically amplified elements of style, design, quality and craftsmanship, while building upon the stellar Corolla reputation for reliability, efficiency and function.

The Corolla makes an immediate visual impact with a more expressive, chiseled exterior design. The new Corolla is distinguished by its tauter, more athletic proportions that ride on a longer wheelbase. With the wheels pushed out toward the corners, compact overhangs, and more tapered front and rear expression, the 2014 Corolla communicates a more dynamic compact sedan form, even at a standstill.
The interior offers a premium aesthetic with its use of piano-black gloss trim highlighted by metallic ornamentation and trim that conveys an upscale yet sportier image. Depending on interior color theme, blue, black or amber pinstriped accents are used in conjunction with the dash and door panel ornamentation to enhance the premium appeal of the interior....

At the other side of the Corolla spectrum is the sportiest grade of Corolla S that wears impactful available 17-inch alloy wheels covers in more performance oriented rubber.

Doug Fox on the 2014 Toyota Corolla

Below you will find a few excerpts from Mr. Doug Fox an editor for the Daily Herald in Utah. See his thoughts on the newly redesigned 2014 Toyota Corolla. To see the complete article READ it HERE

excerpt:

The tagline to the new generation of hip, peppy and musically infused Toyota Corolla commercials is “Let’s Go Places.” For me, that literally turned into a whirlwind two-day trip to San Diego to preview and test drive the brand-spanking new 2014 models.

As a disclaimer, I readily point out that I am not a car expert by any stretch of the imagination. So while we may indeed go places, we won't go there. We do have someone in our office who writes weekly automotive columns for one of our additional print products, but when he was unable to attend the new Corolla unveiling, the offer somehow fell into my lap.

"I'll see what I can work out," was my verbal response. My immediate non-verbal thought, though, was more along the lines of, "You had me at 'San Diego.' "
San Diego in late August -- are you kidding?

excerpt:

Our first route turned out to be the longest as we set out in an LE Eco beyond the Otay Lakes region, on the outlying area of San Diego, and a roundtrip of over 40 miles. The LE Eco is a completely new Corolla model grade. Its calling card is that it is the only Corolla to feature the new Valvematic engine combined with a newly developed Continuously Variable Transmission. Explaining how that actually works is above my pay grade, but the result is more efficient horsepower and better gas mileage. It boasts 42 mpg on the highway, which Toyota claims as the best in its class.

What I can tell you is that we thoroughly enjoyed the LE Eco, and it handled superbly in all the conditions we encountered on this route, which featured some city and highway driving, followed by a lengthy stretch of two-lane highway through hilly and curvy roads out near Outay Lakes.
Our second excursion involved a 2013 Corolla on a short downtown route. This was offered as a way to compare the 2014 models with the year prior. The 2013 was fine, of course, but somehow we didn't feel quite as cool or sporty tooling through downtown as we had in the Eco. The 2014 models were a clear upgrade.

Another favorite was the Corolla S, which is the most sporty model. Once inside the S, we decided to take it on the second-longest route -- and the most scenic -- which involved navigating Palm Boulevard on the south side of Coronado, to Highway 75 and along Silver Strand Boulevard through a long stretch of the city before going over the Coronado Bridge and returning to San Diego. This jaunt offered some of the best views, with enticing white sand beaches just a short distance away. The sporty S, with its cool-looking trapezoid front grille, bright colors and rear spoiler, was extremely fun to drive.

Our final assignment was taking the LE grade for a spin, and the one remaining route cut right through the middle of Balboa Park -- a sprawling 1,200-acre cultural destination that is not only home to the San Diego Zoo, but also museums, theaters, gardens and walking paths. Balboa Park may have only been 4 miles or so away from Broadway Pier, but it seemed worlds away from the busy afternoon traffic in downtown San Diego.

Can I explain to you all the nuts and bolts of the 2014 Toyota Corollas? No. But I can tell you that they were all fun to drive, handled perfectly, accelerated nicely and were an all-around good ride. Oh, and the sound system rocked, although I avoided turning things up as high as I would have liked, out of concern for my riding partner.

Perhaps the best example of how smooth a ride it was is that Judy and I were so often lost in conversation and scenery on our last couple drives, that she would forget to keep close tabs on her navigation duties (following a detailed route map in a separate booklet). In that respect, riding along in the new Corollas felt right at home.

2014 Toyota Corolla Edmunds Review

Back to Basics

Few people proudly proclaim vanilla as their favorite ice cream flavor, yet it's the most popular by a sizable margin. We also don't know anyone who sings the virtues of the Toyota Corolla, yet it's the best-selling car of all time. Coincidence? We think not.

Like vanilla, the Corolla embodies the word "basic." Both are free of polarizing personality, artful flourishes and excitement. They're the safe choice, the one you might blurt out under the pressure to make a quick decision.

In an era where carmakers throw around buzzwords like "sporty," "cutting-edge," "transformative" and "evocative," the 2014 Toyota Corolla sticks to the core principles that make it a sales juggernaut. With descriptors like practical, affordable and dependable, the Corolla expertly taps the vein of car shoppers who simply want basic transportation.

Tried and True Still Works
During the last 40-plus years, the Toyota Corolla has evolved and adapted to changing tastes. It hasn't made a splash, forcing rivals to play catch-up, nor has it pretended to be anything but an affordable car that will faithfully execute its duties for more than 100,000 miles. This latest 11th-generation Corolla is no different.

2014 Toyota Corolla LE Eco

For 2014 the Toyota Corolla brings an all-new look, replacing the outgoing model's generic styling with a slightly less mundane makeover. From the outside, this Corolla is still far from inspiring. Our Corolla LE Eco tester, with plastic plates covering its steel wheels and vast expanses of unadorned sheet metal, is unlikely to turn even its owner's head. And from the outside, it's not a love-it or hate-it proposition. It's simply acceptable and inoffensive.

The 2014 Corolla's interior is equally average. There are no organic shapes, no waterfall center stack or split-level digital readouts. There's a traditional horizontal dashboard from door to door with vents and a cluster of familiar gauges. The dash is dressed up with a glossy black surface surrounding the 6.1-inch touchscreen (standard on LE trims and above). Even the digital clock from generations past remains, making it look dated relative to most of its competitors.

Practicality Defined
Whether the Corolla's aesthetics agree with you, living with one may present mixed results. The front seats provide good comfort and space for average-size adults. There is a lack of lumbar support, though, and taller drivers may bemoan the lack of telescoping steering wheel travel. At the same time, the dashboard's upright face may seem rather tall to shorter folk. Controls are simple and easy to operate with large buttons, and the infotainment touchscreen is quick to respond to inputs.

2014 Toyota Corolla LE Eco

With a wheelbase measuring 3.9 inches longer than before, the rear seats provide a wealth of legroom, measuring at least 5 inches more than most other sedans in this class. This allows for easy mounting of rear-facing child seats without intruding on front-seat comfort. Rear-seat passengers taller than 5 feet 8 inches might still find headroom a challenge, and filling all three seats (as in most compacts) will yield a tight fit.

Throughout the cabin, there is an abundance of hard plastics, but they don't look cheap. Usual elbow touch points offer just enough padding to head off complaints, and there's an acceptable amount of interior storage. Cargo capacity is just about average for the class, too, with 13 cubic feet of trunk space.

Under the Hood, Under the Radar

Under the 2014 Toyota Corolla's surface, it's pretty much business as usual, too. Base models get the same 132-horsepower 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine driving the front wheels through an antiquated four-speed automatic transmission. Should you choose a manual transmission there's a new six-speed to replace last year's five-speed.

Our LE Eco-trimmed test vehicle, however, receives a new Valvematic system with variable intake valve lift and timing. This increases horsepower to 140, but reduces torque from 128 to 126 pound-feet.

2014 Toyota Corolla LE Eco

The big change under the hood is the addition of a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that is available on all but the base L trim. With the CVT and the Valvematic engine, the Corolla's EPA-estimated fuel economy is increased to 35 mpg combined (30 city/42 highway). That's an increase of 3-4 combined mpg over the non-Eco models. In its time with us, we managed an overall average of 30.5 mpg and bested the highway estimate with 42.7 mpg in one highway-heavy driving session.

Good MPG Means Marginal Acceleration
With such favorable fuel economy numbers, we expected performance to suffer, and track testing confirmed our suspicions. Acceleration is leisurely, requiring 9.2 seconds to reach 60 mph (8.9 seconds with a 1-foot rollout as on a drag strip). Compared to the Ford Focus and new 2014 Mazda 3, which both reach the milestone in 8.3 seconds, the Corolla feels noticeably slower. Its CVT does it no favors, with slow response and typical CVT drone.

In braking tests our Corolla required 130 feet to stop from 60 mph, which is shorter than the Focus and Mazda 3 at 131 and 133 feet, respectively. The Honda Civic stops shortest of the group at 124 feet. Like the others, the Corolla was well behaved in panic stops. The brake pedal remained moderately firm, distances were consistent after several passes and the car held its line.

Take the Good With the Bad
Despite unimpressive acceleration, the Corolla acquits itself well where you'd expect: daily commuting. On surface streets the Prius-like acceleration is adequate. And though the CVT might bother an enthusiast, we doubt the Corolla loyal will notice.

The lack of engine braking in Drive means you'll be riding the brakes more than you would with a conventional transmission. Multiple transmission modes (Sport and Braking) solve this problem but will decrease fuel economy when accelerating or cruising.

Despite the slow standing-start acceleration, the Corolla overtakes dawdlers with relative ease. Though the CVT's behavior steals some confidence, you won't find yourself hung out when passing a tractor-trailer.

2014 Toyota Corolla LE Eco

At freeway speeds the twist-beam rear suspension felt busy over the concrete seams common on Southern California freeways. Rain grooves, too, made the Corolla wander more than we'd like. As a result we were busier behind the wheel than we should be. Even so, the interior remains acceptably free of wind and road noises.

With handling numbers that trail its rivals, the Corolla is truly out of its element on winding roads. Body roll is abundant and there's little feedback through the steering wheel to clue you into what the front tires are doing. The CVT, which prefers to keep revs high, doesn't respond quickly to rapid changes in throttle position. But let's be honest: The Corolla has no sporting intentions whatsoever, so these deficiencies matter little.

40 Million Owners Can't Be Wrong. Or Can They?

In all of its basic-ness, the 2014 Toyota Corolla LE Eco will likely excel at being a dependable, unchallenging mode of transportation. With the base trim ringing in at only $16,800 and an as-tested price of $19,735, it's a sensible choice for those who need a long-term commitment that fits into a tight budget.

But those who expect more will do well to look at the Corolla's competition: in particular, the 2013 Honda Civc, which has its own reputation for dependability and longevity. For essentially the same price, a Civic delivers more personality, better styling and the feeling that you got a little more for your money. Mazda's sleek, new Mazda 3 is definitely worth investigating for its more engaging driving dynamics, which makes few sacrifices elsewhere. Rounding out the group is the Ford Focus, which remains one of our top picks in the segment for its all-around excellence.

Despite the fact that the 2014 Toyota Corolla looks and behaves like it's already trailing its contemporaries by a few years, we're confident it'll sell on its reputation alone. That peace of mind, as vanilla as it may be, is the ultimate attraction for pragmatic buyers. We just happen to think there's more to driving than strict sensibility.

King Ranch edition, Big Horn Edition, and the 1794 Edition...One of these is built in Texas.

It's no secret that nearly every truck manufacturer out there has some sort of Texan, Horse towing, ranch inspired truck in their line up that features a slew of different bells and whistles and is more than capable of conquering any type of farm work you can throw its way, but one thing about these trucks might surprise you. Like the title says, between the following trucks; Ford King Ranch, Dodge Big Horn, and the Toyota 1794, one of them is actually built in Texas, by Texans, on what used to be an old ranch. Believe it or not, its the Toyota 1794 Edition Tundra and its the only one built in America. The 1794 is a representation of the year the original Ranch stood where the Toyota Texas manufacturing plant currently stands. The Tundra is truly a ranch inspired truck that is capable of towing over 10,000lbs and is fitted with an amazing i-Force 5.7l V8. So if you have the need for an American built, Ranch inspired truck, look no further than the 1794 Edition, 2014 Toyota Tundra.

Speach by Jim Lentz at the Society of Automobile Engineers Global Leadership Conference

It's a bit of a read, but this really is a great speech by Jim Lintz published by the Toyota Press Room

"Good morning.

Let me start by thanking all of you for your hard work... dedication... and commitment to the auto industry.  Your efforts as automotive engineers continually help manufacturers meet and exceed our customers’ expectations for what they want and need from their transportation.

You know a long time ago... I briefly wanted to be an engineer.

But... there comes a time in a person’s life when they just KNOW that something isn’t the right path for them.

My moment of clarity came on the eve of my son’s fifth birthday.

My wife and I bought him a bike that had on the outside of the box those dreaded words...’some assembly required.’

Well... since I THOUGHT I wanted to be an engineer... I figured... no problem.

I even thought it was okay when I had a few extra parts left over...I mean, what's the harm, right?  It was only a few pieces.

Well... turns out the remaining parts I had were to help control the steering.

So... the next day when my son took his new bike out for a spin... he ended up in the neighbor’s hedge.

He was Ok, but that’s when I decided... maybe something ELSE in the auto industry would be better suited for me.

So... I hold what YOU do for the auto industry in the HIGHEST regards! And...it’s an honor to join you today at the beautiful and historic Greenbrier.

Since 1950, auto industry engineers have assembled here…to identify challenges to the industry, map out solutions, and, if they’re lucky, to shoot their age on the golf course!

Today, sixty-three years after the first SAE meeting, the industry faces challenges of a dynamic and global scale.

Today, I want to talk about three:
  • Consumer demand for vehicles that are safer, more fuel efficient and still affordable;
  • Helping drive the U.S. economy to a full recovery;
  • And, the industry’s role in creating more intuitive and active cars of the future.

Designing and implementing processes to address these challenges will require an even GREATER collaboration between automakers and engineers, state and federal policy makers, regulatory agencies, universities and research institutions.

Today, when drivers get behind the wheel, what do they want?

As we say at Toyota... they want to “Go Places.”

They want to go in a car that was engineered with fuel efficient technologies that require fewer trips to the gas station…and features to keep them and their family safe.

So, automakers and engineers are responding to consumer demand for higher MPG vehicles, with an expanded offering of:

  • more efficient internal combustion engines...
  • hybrids...
  • electric...
  • and alternative-fuel cars, including the next generation ... vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

For Toyota and Lexus, we have 12 hybrid models here in the U.S., that’s helped us sell more than two million hybrid vehicles in this country, 70% of the hybrid market, and over five million hybrids worldwide.

As a result of our hybrids alone... approximately 34 million tons of CO2 emissions have been kept out of the air…and consumers have saved a lot of money at gas pumps.

And we’re not alone in this quest.

Currently, the entire industry features 51 hybrids, 14 clean diesels and 11 electric vehicles.

So you can see, automakers are collaborating daily with engineers, regulators and research institutions to offer more models with higher miles-per-gallon ratings, more hybrid and electric models, and developing plans to quickly increase their lineups of fuel efficient and sustainable vehicles.

Each of these achievements alone represents the attainment of a lofty goal. But as an industry…we don’t merely work toward goals... we keep running the race, and there IS no finish line.

And for the industry, when it comes to safety... it’s more than a commitment to engineering excellence or a marketing slogan.

It’s a commitment to people…the people who purchase our products, their families and loved ones, and the immense pride we, as automakers, designers and engineers, take in building vehicles and seeing them on the road.

One way Toyota tries to demonstrate this commitment is through our Star Safety System, a suite of safety components that comes standard in every new Toyota model that range from Vehicle Stability Control…to Brake Assist…to Traction Control.

And, Toyota’s commitment is not just about OUR cars.

We’re also enhancing vehicle safety through our Collaborative Safety Research Center... or CSRC for short.

At this Center, our engineers define critical areas of study, proactively seek partners with whom we can collaborate, and work closely with our partners to achieve results that will mitigate traffic injuries, improve transportation systems and develop new vehicle innovations.

Our CSRC projects include:

  • Working with the University of Michigan to protect senior drivers and passengers by studying the relationships between age, and how a driver sits in the vehicle due to posture and body shape.
  • Collaborating with Wake Forest University to develop vehicle computer systems that notify first responders in the event of a collision, and predict the likelihood and severity of occupant and driver injuries.
  • Supporting the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, in establishing a database that will help the hospital collect the best child-specific crash injury data so we can find new ways to improvethe safety of child occupants in motor vehicles.

To date, CSRC has partnered with 16 universities, hospitals, research institutions and federal agencies on 26 projects. Toyota has committed approximately $50 million over the next five years to fund the Center and its research.

And the best thing about the Center, we’re sharing our findings with the ENTIRE industry, so ALL consumers can benefit, no matter what vehicle they choose.

In addition to safer and more fuel efficient vehicles... our industry is helping the U.S. to a full economic recovery... the proof is in a number of measurements.

  • The latest government reports show that both personal income and disposable personal income continue to rise.
  • The auto industry has experienced three straight years of at least 10 percent increases in year-to-year sales. And, according to analysts, this year, automakers will sell about 15.5 million vehicles... up nearly 7-percent from last year... although it’s tracking higher right now.

Along with the improving economy, I’m excited because Americans strongly support U.S. manufacturing.

According to a recent poll, 92 percent of Americans said manufacturing is the most important sector for a strong economy. (Source: autoalliance.org "Auto Index" poll). That’s an encouraging statistic, not only for automakers, but for the future of our economy and the communities where we assemble vehicles and components.

No other single industry is linked to so much of U.S. manufacturing or generates so much retail business and employment as the auto industry.

Nationally, 8 million workers and their families depend on the auto industry.  Each year, the industry generates 500-Billion Dollars in paychecks, and 70- Billion in tax revenues. (Source: autoalliance.org "Auto Jobs & Economics" section).

Further, direct industry spending goes beyond investing in employees.

In 2011, the industry led all other manufacturing sectors with nearly 12-Billion Dollars in capital expenditures. The auto industry also invested over 301-Billion Dollars to acquire raw materials and other commodities used for production... outspending all other manufacturing sectors except the petroleum industry. (Source: autoalliance.org "2013 Jobs Report" section).

And... as global demand for products increase... the U.S. auto industry, including Toyota, will rise to the occasion to meet the demand overseas.

In fact, in 2012, we exported approximately 124-Thousand North American-made vehicles to 23 countries. (Source: CNBC interview with Toyota CEO Jim Lentz, September 26, 2013).

In the past 20 months, we’ve invested 2-Billion Dollars in plant expansions and created over 4-Thousand new jobs in North America... with the goal to meet rising U.S. demands and demand in emerging markets. (Source: CNBC interview with Toyota CEO Jim Lentz, September 26, 2013).

Related, industry investments in all aspects of vehicle R & D account for a significant percentage of U.S. economic growth. In 2011, automakers increased their R&D expenditures 15 percent, to 97-Billion Dollars. (Source: autoalliance.org "Auto Innovation" section).

At Toyota... we spend on average One-Million Dollars per hour on R & D...and we’re not alone.

And that’s good because America's economic recovery and future growth depend on a vibrant manufacturing sector, particularly in vehicles, equipment and components.

In addition to leading a prosperous economy, the auto industry is looking to the engineering community for the continued development of “high-level assist technologies.”

These technologies actively manage the vehicle and help create a safer travel experience for drivers, passengers and pedestrians…and many have been around for a while.

Some of the first driver assist technologies include cruise control, anti-lock brakes and stability and traction control.

More recent features include:

  • Sensors to detect pedestrians
  • Radar to measure the distance between you and the vehicle in front of you
  • “Lane Keep Assist,” to help prevent drivers from straying from their lane
  • Even vehicles that can park themselves... with some help from its human occupant.

At the same time, we recognize and respect the numerous obstacles to producing vehicles that are capable of driving themselves, such as:

  • Consumer control of the driving process… Drivers simply don’t want to give up control of driving, and are likely wary of riding on an interstate full of other driverless cars.
  • Regulations, liability and insurance. If a car – not a driver – is supposed to be in control, who is liable in the event of a collision?
  • And infrastructure: Will major advancements in vehicle technology require an overhaul of our roads, bridges and intersection signaling systems?

Instead of working to develop vehicles that drive themselves, Toyota’s view of high-level assist technology is that the driver must ALWAYS be engaged. We see these technologies as a co-pilot to enhance the driver’s skill levels so they can see better, react quicker and stop faster in an array of driving conditions.

As a comparison, the addition of high-level assist technology in our vehicles is similar to the evolution of piloting an airplane.

During the World War I era, pilots flew in rudimentary planes with open cockpits and limited views, relying greatly on their senses and experience to take off, fly and land.

Today, the helmets used by F-15 Strike Eagle pilots display heads-up speed, altitude and target data, freeing the pilot to focus on controlling the aircraft. In fact, the F-15 pilots no longer have to steer the plane to change direction or aim at a target. They simply move their head in a particular direction and let the plane do the work.

I’m not sure that’s such a great idea in cars, but Toyota will continue to work with our engineers to incorporate more high-level assist technologies in our vehicles.

In the end, we can be all be proud that our industry has developed and refined countless innovations in manufacturing and technology, creating safer, more fuel efficient cars and economic opportunity for millions across the globe, while enriching the communities in which we work and conduct business.

The key to our future success is the CONTINUED collaboration between all facets of the auto industry and engineers, state and federal policy makers, regulatory agencies, universities and research institutions.

I want to especially thank YOU…auto industry engineers…who conceptualize, design, build and implement every component in a car….and never stop thinking of ways to improve our products.

Because you care, all of our lives are better.

With our continued collaboration... I’m confident we will engineer a successful future for ourselves…our industry…and the world.

Good luck and Godspeed!

Thank you."

2014 Dodge Dart and the 2014 Corolla S+

We decided to borrow a Dodge Dart from our sister store and a Corolla S+ for our sales personnel to compare. The Dodge Dart is the SXT multi air turbo model with nearly all of the bells and whistles. It's certainly an interesting little car. The model we borrowed gets about 39mpg on the highway as compared to the Corolla S+ that gets 37mpg on the highway and the Corolla LE Eco that does 42mpg on the highway. The interior on the Dart all faces the driver making it a bit more like a European car however, it lacks a touch screen (Optional). The Corolla S+ comes with a touch screen and the ability to do voice commands and use Entune. Stop by check out the Corolla S+ for yourself, and if there are any questions you'd like to ask about either vehicle be sure to comment below.

New hydrogen vehicle to touch the ground in 2015

Looks like Toyota has a pretty finite plan to touch U.S. soil with a Hydrogen car in 2015. Toyota used a small prototype sedan in Japan earlier in the week to give test drives with. A similar car, with quick acceleration, sharp handling, and a different exterior is said to be making its debut at next month's Tokyo Motor Show. Will the technology seems new, it's actually been in the works since 2000. As you can imagine with the way technology advances nearly 14 years is quite a substantial amount of time for technology to be in the research and development stage. It wasn't that many years ago that the iPhone was just a concept, now look where we are. Think Would you be interested in a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle?

More on the new driving support system.

Yesterday we posted the Toyota Press room news release about their newest advanced driving support system. The system looks like it uses a combination of different technologies to communicate with vehicles around it (equip with the same technology of course) to ensure a collision does not take place. This type of technology seems like something out of the movie i-Robot! Today we found a picture of the system in action and thought we would share. Tell us what you think about this type of technology and if you would want it in your Toyota.

Toyota has a new advanced driving support system

Toyota City, Japan, October 11, 2013 — Toyota Motor Corporation announces that it has developed a next-generation advanced driving support system, Automated Highway Driving Assist (AHDA), which uses automated driving technologies to support safer highway driving.

AHDA links two automated driving technologies to support safer driving and reduce driver workload: Cooperative-adaptive Cruise Control, which wirelessly communicates with preceding vehicles to maintain a safe distance; and Lane Trace Control, which aids steering to keep the vehicle on an optimal driving line within the lane.

Toyota recognizes the importance of the driver being in ultimate control of a vehicle and is therefore aiming to introduce AHDA and other advanced driving support systems wherethe driver maintains control and the fun-to-drive aspect of controlling a vehicle is not compromised. Toyota plans to market the newly developed AHDA in the mid-2010s and other driving support systems as soon as possible to provide safe and secure means of transportation.

Ahead of trials on the Shuto Expressway near the Tokyo metropolitan area starting October 15, Toyota will exhibit AHDA at the 20th Intelligent Transport Systems World Congress Tokyo 2013, an international conference for intelligent transport systems (ITS), to be held from October 14 to 18.

In addition, to enable prompt market introduction of next-generation driving support systems, Toyota will make use of the cutting-edge component technologies and know-how acquired through automated driving research conducted with the advanced active safety research vehicle unveiled at the 2013 International CES in Nevada, United States in January this year.

New Pedestrian Safety Technology by Toyota

Toyota Press Room--

Toyota City, Japan, Oct. 11, 2013 — Toyota Motor Corporation announces that it has developed a Pre-collision System (PCS) that uses automatic steering in addition to increased pre-collision braking force and automatic braking to help prevent collisions with pedestrians.  Toyota is committed to developing safety technologies that help eliminate traffic fatalities and injuries involving pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.

The new PCS with Pedestrian-avoidance Steer Assist can help prevent collisions in cases where automatic braking alone is not sufficient, such as when the vehicle is travelling too fast or a pedestrian suddenly steps into the vehicle’s path.  An on-board sensor detects pedestrians and issues a visual alert on the dashboard immediately in front of the driver if the system determines that there is a risk of collision.  If the likelihood of a collision increases, the system issues an audio and visual alarm to encourage the driver to take evasive action, and the increased pre-collision braking force and automatic braking functions are activated.  If the system determines that a collision cannot be avoided by braking alone and there is sufficient room for avoidance, steer assist is activated to steer the vehicle away from the pedestrian.

The number of traffic fatalities in Japan has declined for 12 consecutive years, reaching 4,411 in 2012.  However, of that total, pedestrian fatalities are the most common, accounting for 37.0 percent*.

Last year, Toyota developed a system that uses increased pre-collision braking force and automatic braking to help prevent collisions with pedestrians.  The system, which was adopted on the Lexus “LS”, warns the driver when it detects a potential collision with a pedestrian or obstacle. If the driver does not take action to avoid the collision, the system activates.

TMC aims to make PCS (Pedestrian-avoidance with no steer assist) more affordable and roll it out by 2015 on a wider range of vehicles, before introducing PCS with Pedestrian-avoidance Steer Assist.

A motorcycle inspired Toyota vehicle.

Toyota has recently confirmed a new production vehicle and it only has 3 wheels. The vehicle shares much in common with a motorcycle, and is fully electric. It's Toyota's i-Road electric trike, and its a close range inner city commuting vehicle whose wheels don't function like that of a car with a steering rack. Instead the vehicle takes advantage of lean angles and drives much like a motorcycle would, making it very compact. It's an interesting little vehicle that would work great for folks who commute around downtown Charleston. It doesn't look like we will ever see the vehicle in the states, but its still quite a neat concept and the fact that it is actually going into production in the JDM (Japanese domestic market) says something about Toyota's confidence in a vehicle of this nature. Take a look at the pictures below and be sure to stay tuned to our blog for more information on all things Toyota!

A truck like frame for demanding conditions.

The 2014 4Runner is a little different than your average SUV. One of the things that make it different is the "Body-on-frame" design, which means much like a truck the body is set on top of a separate frame, unlike some of its competitors which use a car-like unibody construction. The 2014 4Runner is more rugged, thanks to its "Body-on-frame" design. While it may be a bit heavier and less agile on pavement, it's far better suited for heavy duty challenges like off-road use, towing, and hauling than unibody SUV's. Comment below if you have any questions about this awesome vehicle!
